Polish floods abate
After over a week of flooding in Poland the water appears to have begun retreating - 28th May 2010
Floods across Poland which have affected all but two provinces were showing signs of abating today.
The flooding started last week when heavy rains caused the rivers Odra, Vistula and Warta to burst their banks and have resulted in the deaths of 17 people.
The flooding has mobilised a massive emergency services operation with 15,000 firefighters being utilised and 4,000 soldiers being drafted in along with police and border guards. They have been using helicopters and amphibious vehicles to assist in checking people are ok and rescuing where necessary.
Signs are that the flood waters are moving towards the Baltic Sea in the south and east according to the ministry.
